What size violin is right for me?

Child violin playerI often come across children that play on violins that are too big or too small for them. This is bad for their technique and ruins their playing experience. So what size is right? It is fortunately quite easy to determine with a single measurement.

Ask the player to lift their left arm and hold it straight and horizontally to the side. Now measure from the base of the neck to the centre of the left hand. You can now read off the correct size from the table below.

Arm length for 7/8 violin is missing

Hi:

I am a normal size oriental adult.  Naturally 4/4 seems to be too big and 3/4 seems to be too small.  Do you have an arm length for the 7/8 size violin.

I suppose it will be around

I suppose it will be around 580mm.

A 7/8 is what was called a 'ladies' violin in the old days. It is not very common and smaller people will normally try to play on full-sized violins. It will be more or less similar to a 'normal' sized player playing a viola, if you know what I mean.

If you really struggle, then a good quality 7/8 is certainly an option to consider.

Hope it helps!
